How the Final Exam Score Is Calculated

Your final course grade is a weighted mix of your current grade and the final exam:

Final grade = current grade × (1 − final weight) + final exam score × final weight

Solving for the exam score gives the score you need:

Score needed = (grade you want − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight

For example, with a current grade of 84%, a target of 90%, and a final worth 30%: (90 − 84 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 104%.

What the Result Means

  • Above 100%: the target is out of reach unless extra credit is available. Try a lower target to see what is realistic.
  • Below 0%: you will reach the target even with a zero on the final, though skipping a final usually has other consequences.
  • Between: that is the minimum percentage you need on the exam.

Your current grade should already reflect the weights of completed work. If you need to work it out, use the Grade Calculator first.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my final exam weight?
Your course syllabus usually lists how much each component is worth. If the final is worth 30% of the course grade, enter 30.
Why does the calculator say I need more than 100%?
Because even a perfect score on the final would not raise your average enough. The final would need to be worth more, or the target lower.
Does this work with letter grades?
Convert letter grades to percentages first using your school's scale, for example 90% for the bottom of an A on a common US scale.
