How to Calculate a Weighted Grade

Most courses don't count every assignment equally. A final exam might be worth 35% of the grade while each quiz is worth 5%. A weighted average multiplies each score by its weight, adds the results, and divides by the total weight:

Weighted average = (score₁ × weight₁ + score₂ × weight₂ + …) ÷ (weight₁ + weight₂ + …)

For example, with 92% on homework worth 20%, 85% on quizzes worth 20%, 78% on a midterm worth 25%, and 88% on a final worth 35%: (92×20 + 85×20 + 78×25 + 88×35) ÷ 100 = 85.7%.

What If the Weights Don't Add Up to 100%?

If you only have some grades so far, enter just those. The calculator divides by the weight you have entered, so it shows your current average based on completed work. "Weight Entered" shows how much of the course that covers. To find what you need on a remaining exam, use the Final Grade Calculator.

Converting a Percentage to a Letter Grade

Letter-grade cutoffs vary by school, so check your syllabus. A common US scale is:

  • A: 90–100%
  • B: 80–89%
  • C: 70–79%
  • D: 60–69%
  • F: below 60%

Many schools also use plus and minus grades within each band, such as B+ for 87–89%. To turn letter grades into a GPA, use the GPA Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my grade if all assignments count equally?
Give every assignment the same weight, for example 1 each. The weighted average then equals the simple average of your scores.
Can I enter points instead of percentages?
Convert each score to a percentage first by dividing the points earned by the points possible and multiplying by 100. For example, 42 out of 50 is 84%.
Why can a score be above 100%?
Extra credit can push a score above 100%, so the calculator accepts scores up to 150%.
